Benefits for same sex couples

I read that some gay/lesbian leaders are calling Obama’s action to provide benefits for same sex federal employees “too little too late.” Oh, give me a break. Women and Blacks and Asians and Hispanics and immigrants and refugees have been dealing with discrimination here in the U.S. for centuries, and they have not complained that bits of legislation or laws or rulings or whatever were EVER “too little too late.” Rather they are steps in the right direction, even if they are baby steps. Get a grip.

Huffington’s suggestion

A few days ago, I saw Ms. Huffington of The Huffington Post suggest to a talk show host that he should blog. Then she proceeded to explain that a blog is not perfect writing….it’s whatever comes to one’s mind. It’s supposed to be spontaneous. Okay! Now I get it. A spontaneous online journal of sorts…from my perspective.

When driving or otherwise occupied and away from the computer, my mind wanders about certain topics I might comment on. Hmmmm….teaching community college students, what it’s like to reach 60, semi-retirement, applying for social security, grandchildren, things that drive me crazy, why I keep wanting to start new things instead of get comfortable watching daytime TV in a recliner….on and on and on.

With a busy fall semester finished and holiday travels ahead, I ease into 2009 as an official blogger.

It’s All About Us….or Not

Yesterday was my first viewing of “Synecdoche, New York,” and although some say it is “too artsy,” I loved it.  I think I sat transfixed for the last third of the film, smiling and thinking to myself, “Yes…yes…this is what it’s all about.”  Don’t miss this masterpiece.

So what is this blogging thing all about?  Is it a portal through which our egos are permitted to bloat and brag…an assurance that each blogger can leave his/her mark on the world… or simply a platform on which to experience life on this planet together?  I guess I’ll find out.

I’m not even sure why I’m joining in on this.  I suppose I’m feeling the need to comment on what’s going on in the world before heading off to “The Next Adventure.”  That’s what I call death.  So before I die, why not yammer on with millions of others?  The challenge, of course, will be to yammer honestly and authentically.  Big challenge.
